Year 3: Studio & International

The focus in the second year is on developing a personal visual language and the skills necessary to translate this into successful visual communication practice. You will also focus on researching and defining a specific audience and developing a market understanding through professional practice. Year 3: studio + & international studio+ is an optional year open to all design students allowing you to engage with the world beyond ncad by gaining practical work experience in the form of internships and industry placements on live commercial, social or community projects. Studio+ can also include a work placement abroad or a study abroad period through the erasmus programme with internationally recognised art and design faculties partnered with ncad.

It's likely you'll be based in a shared studio or office as some jobs involve working in teams, although you may also work alone on occasions. If you're a freelancer you could share offices, rent studio space or work from home. Design work often involves sitting and working at a computer for long periods of time. Job satisfaction comes from creating high-quality artwork, seeing your designs in use and building a reputation. Jobs are available in major cities and towns, with advertising agencies predominantly based in london, the south east, manchester and leeds. There's also a demand for british graphic designers internationally with opportunities in europe, japan, australia and the usa, but it's advisable to work in the uk for a year before seeking work abroad.

The preliminary year has a required studio course sequence and additional electives are not recommended. Fall art 710a, preliminary studio: 6 credits art 264a2, typography: 3 credits art 370a, designing with time, motion and sound: 3 credits art 468a, advanced graphic design: series and systems: 3 credits total minimum credits for fall term: 15 spring art 711b, preliminary studio: 6 credits art 265b, expression, structure, and sequence: typography: 3 credits art 369b, interactive design and the internet: 3 credits art 469b, advanced graphic design: history, editing, and interpretation: 3 credits total minimum credits for spring term: 15 first year there are 3 required courses in the first year of the two-year program, totaling 15 credits.

Skills [ edit ]

This year is a broad expansion of the basic principles learned in the latter part of year one and is an opportunity to gain new knowledge and skills along with greater awareness of the design process through projects for visual identity, editorial, advertising and ux/ui design. Subjects in this year are: design communications, typography, graphic design production, lens based media, professional practice and critical & contextual studies.
